Game of Thrones Season 5
Game of Thrones: Season 5 review
Every Game of Thrones’ fan knows what to expect from the following seasons: bloody verbal battles between the characters, gore overflowing the screen, bed scenes which raise blood pressure, tension, and blood-curdling twists. One can get the impression that the name of the title throne refers to the iron covered in blood…
In the fifth season, some aspects have been toned down, but we certainly shouldn’t talk about politeness. There may be less sex scenes, fights and battles may not shock with direct gore, yet the creators can still surprise the viewers and cause controversy over the fate of individual characters. However, if you think about it, doesn’t it denote the power of the world created by the HBO team? If we didn’t deal with the well-written characters, the attractive world, and the engaging story, the adventures of Sansa or Jon would be given much less importance. Nevertheless, we’re talking about the series whose plot is watched by viewers from over 170 countries around the world.
The scale of production and the impact of Game of Thrones on the audience is undeniable. Which other series hires more than a thousand extras and sends twice as many away? The documentary material which can be found on one of the DVDs gives some insight into the process of recording the fifth season. We can learn how much effort and creativity were put into costumes and decorations, which unique locations were chosen to serve as the backdrop, and how complicated it was to coordinate the teams working in three different parts of Europe.
Another awe-inspiring aspect is the quality of special effects and decorations. It is true that some of the places where the series was shot were practically composed of a ready-made set, yet in many cases, the artists responsible for this element in Game of Thrones had to create locations such as Hardhome or the House of Black and White completely from scratch, partly on the set and partly in computers. The effects of the work of architects and graphic designers are staggering. They are in no way inferior to the scenery of cinema fantasy productions – sometimes, they even exceed them. Above all, the places created for the needs of the series look extremely realistic. Similarly, the jaw-dropping dragons give the impression of the tangible creatures present on the set. Equally important, the characters standing near the computer-generated elements do not cut themselves off, but naturally blend in and interact with them, which allows the presented events to even more entertain the viewers and work on their emotions.
The aficionados of additional materials won’t be disappointed, provided that they know English quite well. The DVD edition offers a huge number of bonuses that allow you to broaden the knowledge of the series. The extras are extremely interesting. In addition to the standard comments of the directors and actors regarding individual episodes and various behind-the-scenes material, the most eye-opening, two-part documentary on the historical inspirations behind the characters and events of Game of Thrones deserves the most attention.
The fifth visit to Westeros and Essos is not disappointing. The screenwriters can still surprise the audience, the presented world is impressive, and the characters – if they don’t actually die – enter into appealing and often unexpected interactions and hold fascinating conversations.
The four-disc Blu-ray edition is prepared with the same attention to detail as the series itself. In addition to ten episodes of the fifth season, there are also exceptional extras such as:
